Our Story
It began in the 1980s with a baby on his grandmother's lap and a sound like music—the rhythmic strike of the weaving comb against wool. In Tozeur, a sun-bleached town at the edge of the Sahara, this wasn't music. It was livelihood. It was tradition. It was love.
The women of this small village created kilims for their daughters' weddings, weaving protection, prosperity, and beauty into every knot and line. The carpets they made were so stunning that they never stopped creating. What began as dowry became craft. What began as tradition became enterprise.
Today, Saffron & Silk Atelier honors that legacy.
Each piece is entirely handmade on traditional wooden looms using techniques unchanged for generations. One artisan per loom—two for larger commissions with tight timelines. The process is meditative, meticulous, and deeply personal. No two pieces are ever identical. Each carries the signature of its maker's hands.

Six women—masters of the loom—carry forward centuries of Berber weaving knowledge. They are mothers, grandmothers, and guardians of a vanishing art. Working from small villages on the outskirts of the Sahara, they transform premium wool into vibrant geometry and timeless pattern.
This is more than work. It's a social club. A sisterhood. A lifeline for families in Tunisia's rural south. Every kilim they create supports their households, their community, and the preservation of an ancient craft.
